Nişantaşı is often introduced through its shop windows. Thinking of it only as a place to buy things, however, can mean overlooking other details. Alongside the activity of the main streets are apartment entrances, balconies and turns into smaller roads. You do not need a shopping list to enjoy spending time here. Walking slowly through a few streets and looking at the buildings can tell you something about the everyday life of the area. ## Look up in Teşvikiye

As you walk around Teşvikiye, look above the ground-floor windows. Balconies, window surrounds and entrances on some older apartment buildings tell a different story from the activity at pavement level. You can enjoy those details without knowing the name or construction date of every building. Exploring architecture does not require entering private spaces: what you can see from the street is enough. If you take photographs, be considerate of residents, their privacy and access to their homes. There is a noticeable difference between passing quickly along a road and stopping a few times to look. You do not need a grand historical narrative to appreciate it.

## Leave space for green surroundings

Maçka Demokrasi Park offers a green setting close to Nişantaşı. Its trees, paths and places to sit provide a change from the surrounding streets. Rather than making the park the fixed centre of an entire day, think of it as a possible pause, depending on where you are and what you feel like doing. Different entrances and nearby streets may involve different walking conditions, so check the part you intend to visit on a map. If you wish to avoid slopes or steps, look into the particular route. Somewhere appearing nearby does not mean that every approach will be equally comfortable for everyone.

## Small choices rather than a fixed route

You do not have to turn these three names into a route to complete in one outing. A short look around Nişantaşı may be enough for one day; on another occasion you might choose to spend longer near Maçka. Poor weather can be a reason to shorten an outdoor plan, and crowds can be a reason to leave earlier. If a particular exhibition or venue interests you, check its current information directly. The aim is not to cover every street. It is to notice a few things that interest you that day. A second visit can reveal details you missed the first time.

## Make it fit your visit

If you are spending time around an appointment in Şişli, avoid turning nearby neighbourhood names into promises about walking times. Your exact starting point, destination, chosen route and the conditions on the day all matter. Keep the appointment as a fixed point and let the remaining time be a smaller space for discovery. If a companion has separate plans, agree clearly where you will meet again. Activities for someone receiving treatment depend on advice from their treating clinician. Getting to know this part of Istanbul need not become a task to complete. A few streets and a well-chosen pause can be enough for one day.
